Trash is collected on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
Recycling is collected on Wednesday
Trash Collection
Put trash out between 6:00-8:00 a.m. on collection days only, including holidays except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Trash should be placed at the curb in plain sight—away from shrubs and cars—in sealed heavy-duty plastic bags.
American Disposal Services does not operate on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day.
If the collection for the day has already taken place, you must bring your trash back inside your unit until the next collection day. Trash left out is not only unsightly, but it is a health hazard and it entices rodents and crows. In order to deter trash violations, please report violators to The Oakton's property manager. Trash placed outside other than during the specified hours will lead to that unit being fined $50.00.
Trash pick-up is for household waste only. You may not dispose of construction or remodeling waste and household hazardous waste (computers, televisions, paint, pesticides, oil, gas, antifreeze, corrosive chemicals, ammunition, etc.). For more information on household hazardous waste, contact the Fairfax County Office of Solid Waste at 703-324-5068. Computer equipment and televisions may be recycled at PC Recycler, Inc. located in Chantilly, Va. See below for additional information.
To dispose of large items such as furniture and appliances, an appointment must be arranged with American Disposal Service. Contact them at 703-368-0500 at least one week in advance to arrange for pick-up.
Trash Collection During Inclement Weather
American Disposal Services (ADS) will suspend trash collection in areas which they deem unsafe due to snow or ice, or at a time when weather has deteriorated to the point where conditions are deemed unsafe. There are no adjustments or make-up days for missed services due to inclement weather. Service will resume on the next regularly scheduled collection day. If you would like to verify whether or not ADS has canceled service due to inclement weather, go to their website at www.american-disposal.com.
If service has been canceled due to inclement weather, residents are required to bring the trash back inside their unit. Do not leave trash out until the next service collection. Leaving trash out attracts rats.
Recycling Collection
Place recyclables curbside between 6:00-8:00 a.m. on Wednesdays.
- if you need a recycle bin, contact The Oakton's property manager.
- All recyclables should be empty and clean—no food or soiled materials.
- Place newspapers at the bottom of the recycling bin to prevent the papers from being blown around the parking lot or in paper bags. Do not use paper bags during wet weather/snowy days.
- Residents are responsible for retrieving their containers the night of the trash pick up. Do not leave your recycling bin out or stored on the grounds. Recycling bins left out or stored on the common areas will be confiscated by management.
Acceptable items include: newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, paperboard boxes, flatten cardboard, mixed paper, junk mail, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs, soda bottles and cans, non-prescription pill bottles, and metal cans. The items do not need to be separated or sorted.

Litter on the Grounds
A contractor picks up trash littered on the grounds twice a month. It is unfortunate to incur this extra expense, but it is important to keep the grounds free of litter to protect our property values.
Residents can help with the litter problem by:
- picking up litter on the grounds;
- not littering. For instance, don't let flyers left in your door drop to the ground—dispose of them inside your unit;
- not leaving junk mail at the mail kiosk;
- not discarding cigarette butts on the grounds;
- sealing trash in heavy-duty bags. Trash in unsealed bags can litter the grounds—especially on windy days; and
- not putting trash out on non-pickup days. Trash bags left out on the grounds attracts squirrels, rats, and crows.
Pet Waste
Owners must clean up after their pets even in the pet walk areas. Do not leave bags of pet excrement on the grounds after trash collection has taken place. Due to numerous complaints, the board of directors has no alternative but to impose a $50.00 fine per violation on unit owners who refuse to comply with the Condominiums Rules and Regulations and the Fairfax County Leash, License, Scoop Code (Section 4-11). Non-compliance of this County Code is a Class 4 Misdemeanor that carries a maximum $250.00 fine.
Pet waste is the leading cause of dog-to-dog disease and it can wash into the storm water run-off and contaminate the communitys water. In addition, pets, children who play outside are at risk from some of the bacteria and parasites found in pet waste. Please be considerate of your neighbors and clean up after your pet.
